Client Spotlight: Father’s Incorporated—Father of the Year Award (Hampton Roads, VA)
Since 1987, the nonprofit Fathers Incorporated has promoted the values of brotherhood, manhood, fatherhood, and gentlemanship.
Its four programs encourage men and fathers to embrace their roles in their families and communities:
Returning Citizen Program
Helps formerly incarcerated, nonviolent men reconnect with their families and communities.
Intergenerational Program
Brings together elders and youth.
Scholarship Program
Offers grants encouraging male students to become nurses.
Father of the Year Award
Recognizes deserving fathers in communities facing high rates of violence and hardship.
The Father of the Year Award
The award “identifies, acknowledges, and rewards deserving fathers from US cities experiencing high rates of violence, family, and community affliction.”
“The Father of the Year Award is made to a ‘deserving father’ living in the midst of chaos, mayhem, and confusion who changed his life, the life of children, family, and community for the better,” Woodson said. “The goal of the award program is to positively change the hearts and minds of men and fathers and encourage the concept of family and community.”
How Fathers Are Chosen
Fathers are nominated by family, friends, or others who know them as exceptional fathers and assets to their communities. They’re evaluated on the past year’s achievements, earlier accomplishments, and ongoing contributions.

- Competitive scoring; the highest overall score wins
- Background check
- Final personal interview with the board
