Since February 2019, Suga Shay has been cooking up a storm in Oakland with her food and drink business, Suga Shay’s Freak Treats.
At first, all she sold was beverages, but later decided to branch out and start selling food, bringing “edgy twists to Southern classics.” Currently, her website lists a wide variety of dishes, featuring everything from lobster and shrimp kabobs to strawberry shortcake cheesecakes to adult slushies.
Suga Shay uses her own unique recipes in her kitchen, often incorporating her personal love of seafood. “My signature dishes include shrimp and fries, lobster, crab, jambalaya and strawberry crumble cake,” she said.
She’s been cooking since she was a child, and her love of food and wish to share her passion by selling good food at a quality price led her to solidifying her brand and its purpose.
Ultimately, Suga Shay’s goal is to share her food with the world and become a restaurant owner. She is currently hoping to have multiple locations, as well as develop her own seasoning brand.
In terms of growth, she’s been focusing fairly heavily on advertising, starting so far with Instagram, Google, commercials, and now a billboard campaign. She even has an app in progress, and hopes to gain some more exposure to a wider audience with current and future advertising campaigns.
Like with any business, she’s had her highs and lows. For instance, losing a parent while focusing on her life and business was a crucial moment that resulted in difficulty. Alternatively, some highs include getting on Google—a stand-out moment later includes receiving over 10,000 views—and being invited to join DoorDash.
Suga Shay can be found on Instagram, Google, and at her website.
