Brand Voice: What it is & How to Use it

Have you ever thought about what makes your company different?

That’s where brand voice comes into play. It’s what makes your brand unique and helps you stand out from the sea of voices online.

Brand voice

The personality your brand conveys across all of your communications: a blueprint for what to say and how to say it, including tone, style, and messaging.

Your brand voice should be unique to your company and express its values. It applies everywhere your brand speaks:

Advertising
Newsletters
Social media
Customer service
Internal communications

Why Brand Voice Matters

Brand voice makes you recognizable amid the competition. In a saturated digital landscape, consistent content is essential for a strong brand presence.

AI can help develop marketing content, but it doesn’t have personality. As AI grows in marketing, demand will rise for human marketers who can shape a unique brand voice, drawing on their own experiences to lead the organization’s voice.

Successful brand awareness is when someone can identify your brand from its content alone.

How to Use Brand Voice

1

Know Your Audience

Your voice should reflect your values and goals while being tailored to your audience. As you define who you’re speaking to and why, build a branding toolkit of personality traits, adjectives, and common vocabulary.

For example, an Indiana popcorn brand targeting locals could use region-specific language like “Hoosier,” a term for an Indiana resident.
2

Tailor Your Tone to Different Content

Your voice stays consistent, but your tone varies by content type:

Social media

Casual and cheerful

Customer communication

Formal and polite

Tone also shifts between social networks. LinkedIn is more formal, with an audience focused on career development and growth, while X (formerly Twitter) thrives on the exchange of quick, short messages.

3

Review and Monitor

Your brand voice doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Review it regularly and update it to reflect changing trends and social climate. Language is always evolving, and the words popular five years ago may not be relevant today.

Without regular check-ins, you risk sounding out of date to your audience.
